Government putting people first in the pursuit of sustainable development, says Senator Byron

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 18, 2018 (SKNIS): Senator and Deputy Speaker in the National Assembly, Honourable Akilah Byron-Nisbett, stated during the 2019 Budget Address, 2018, that the government is putting people first in the pursuit of sustainable development.

Senator Byron said that throughout the past year, 2018, it is evident that the programmes, policies, and capital projects pursued by the government were truly focused on putting people first.

“The people, the grassroots of our society, have been greatly impacted by some project, programme or policy of this government over the past year,” she said, while making her contribution to the debate. This year’s Appropriation Bill (2019) 2018, with a Budget address that is dubbed sustaining growth and prosperity continues in that same vein.”

She added that having perused the estimates for 2019, “seeing the people focused programmes for 2019 and hearing the presentations of the members before me on their plans for their respective ministries for 2019, which all directly touches the people, I rise in full support of the Appropriation Bill (2019) 2018.”

Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, stated during his 2019 Budget Address on December 12, that the Team Unity Administration “is particularly proud to reflect on the record achievements since taking the reins of the Government in February 2015. The impact of the various policy initiatives, programmes and projects of this Administration has been far-reaching and is being felt throughout our communities.”

He noted that the government has delivered solutions in education, health care, housing, water and sanitation, roads and public infrastructure.

“No investment in our people is too great. Accordingly, we will continue to invest in these areas in order to achieve our goal of sustainable and inclusive development and our vision for a shared prosperity for all citizens,” said the prime minister.
