Ringing in 2019 with a difference in Sandy Point

By: Sandy Point Community Churches, Press Release

January 9th, 2019 -- The leadership and members of the churches of the Sandy Point Community combined their efforts to host two (2) events as their start for 2019. The first of the two events was their Annual New Year’s Day Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, 1st January, 2019. This was followed over the weekend of 5th and 6thJanuary, 2019 with the preparation and distribution of care packages to elderly and needy persons as well as to elder care homes within the Sandy Point Community.

During the month of December, 2018, the Sandy Point Community Churches leadership planned a Community Outreach Initiatives aimed at securing items that can combine to form care packages for elderly and needy persons on the community. Supermarkets in the town, namely B’s Enterprises, E& K Supermarket and Dollar Stretcher Supermarket, agreed to allow the placement of containers in the supermarket where shoppers can deposit dried goods and toiletries to be given to the community’s elderly. All containers were filled with donations. A substantial donation of items was also received from Hon. Shawn Richards, Parliamentary representative for St. Anne’s parish. All donations combined with other groceries purchased from financial contributions from the community churches enabled the preparation of over sixty (60) care packages for individuals and three (3) packages for elderly care homes. Each package contained biscuits, juice, breakfast items, tinned foods and toiletries. The packages for the elderly care homes also included packs of adult papers and other items for meal preparation.

Then on Saturday, 5th and Sunday, 6thJanuary, 2019, different combination of representatives from the churches in the Sandy Point Community met and visited the elderly recipients to deliver the packages. Those who received the packages were very appreciative; some expressed great delight in receiving the surprise packages and in being remembered and appreciated by the community churches. Many elderlies of the Sandy Point Community were smiling and thanking God greatly after they received the tokens from the Sandy Point Community Churches.

The coordinating team for the Sandy Point Community Churches extends profound gratitude to all who donated items for the care packages, to the Sandy Point Supermarkets that accommodated the bins for the donations, to the members of the various churches who assisted in the packing and delivery of the New Year’s Day Elderly Tokens.

The Sandy Point Community Churches is a group of representatives from the various churches in the town of Sandy Point. The group meets and plans ecumenical events for the people of the area and functions under the motto “Putting aside differences to help and heal our community”.
