BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, January 14, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Sponsor of the longest running domino league in the country, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, is upbeat that the league has fulfilled its intended purpose of uniting communities in Constituency Number Seven which he represents in the National Assembly.
Started in 1996 with seven teams taking part, the annual Constituency Number Seven Dr the Hon Timothy Harris Domino League has grown with the 23rd edition which was held last year (2018) having fourteen teams from constituencies Number Seven and Number Six taking part. However one team dropped out and only thirteen completed the gruelling home and away round-robin encounters.
“I feel honoured for over the last 23 years we have developed a solid bond of friendship and cooperation,” said Prime Minister Harris on Saturday January 12 at the prize giving ceremony held at the Edgar Gilbert Sporting Complex pavilion in Molineux for the 23rd edition of the annual Constituency Number Seven Dr the Hon Timothy Harris Domino League competition.
According to Prime Minister Harris, one issue that troubled founding members of the league, among them Mr Osmond Petty, Mr Winston Morris, and Mr Calvin Farrell, was the observation of ill-discipline among young people, including the development of gang culture which forced people to restrict their movements. That action eroded the camaraderie and friendship that ought to have existed between the communities.
“The league was intended in part to be a social intervention and an answer to that,” observed the Honourable Prime Minister, who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), one of the three parties in the ruling Team Unity Administration.
“23 years later we can say that we have played our part in getting communities together - in allowing our people to move from one section of the country, one region of the country, one village of the country to another, and to do so knowing they have friends and colleagues and well-wishers there,” said Dr Harris. “So my heart feels blessed - blessed to have been part of this exercise.”
Two teams from Constituency Number Six took part in the domino competition last year, Saddlers Domino Club and Parsons Domino Club. Parsons made history after becoming the first team from outside Constituency Number Seven to win the championship.
Other teams taking part were Lodge - the immediate past champions who ended up in the second position, Unity, Unstoppable, Molineux, Giants, Sylvers, Guinness, Beers, Small Corner, Christchurch, and Phillips, all from Constituency Number seven. Tabernacle, which only took part in five matches of the first round, withdrew citing lack of players.
Prime Minister Harris, who celebrated 25 years as a parliamentarian in November last year, noted that in 23 of the 25 years of his participation in public service he supported the domino league. He said he will always remember fondly all who have participated, and who made the league grow from strength to strength, pledging to do all he can to work with the league to ensure it continues onward into greater and more success.
“I wish all of you all the very best for 2019,” Dr Harris told the prize giving ceremony at the Edgar Gilbert Sporting Complex pavilion in Molineux that was attended by many domino players and fans, and chaired by the Peoples Labour Party Deputy National Political Leader Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett. “We are looking forward to another interesting league.”
