January 15th, 2019 -- Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris extends his heartfelt condolences, and those of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, to the family and loved ones of Ivan Charles Buchanan CBE, JP.

Ivan Buchanan CBE, JP, who served as Speaker of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly from 1985 to 1995, has died at the age of 97 years old.  He would have turned 98 later this month.  Ivan Charles Buchanan was born on January 28th, 1921 in Sandy Point, St. Kitts to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Susannah (née Fox) Buchanan.

“Ivan Buchanan CBE, JP made an indelible imprint on the fabric of our country, rendering outstanding service that spanned more than half a century,” the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis said today, Tuesday, January 15th, 2019.

“He played a significant role in our post-Independence history as the longest-serving Speaker of the National Assembly, which was established by our 1983 Constitution to replace the House of Assembly,” Prime Minister Harris added, while noting, “Indeed, Ivan Buchanan CBE, JP was the longest-serving Speaker post-Statehood.”

Prime Minister Harris also said, “For a defining decade (1985-1995), Ivan Buchanan CBE, JP expertly presided over the esteemed chamber as a generation of trailblazing lawmakers introduced and passed substantive bills that changed the landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis for the better.”

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis continued, “Our country will forever be inspired by his deep commitment to nation-building, which saw him also make enduring contributions to the fields of education and public health, the public service in general as a Member of the Public Service Commission, as well as to the banking and insurance industry as a Director of the National Bank Group of Companies.”

One of the founding members of The Cable television company, Ivan Charles Buchanan also worked at the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Trading & Development Company (TDC) Ltd. as General Manager of its Automotive Division.

Prime Minister Harris extends deepest sympathy to Mrs. Beatrice Buchanan, his wife of over 40 years, and children.
