Project E.P.I.C. Places Entrepreneurship at the Forefront with Pitch Competition

By: MoE, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, January 17, 2019:  The first annual Elevating Potential Imagination and Collaboration (E.P.I.C.) pitch competition for current second year trainees at the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC) took place on January 16 at the school premises.

The entrepreneurial competition gave the trainees a platform to present their business ideas to a panel of established business sector representatives and a live audience. EPIC is designed for early-stage start-ups to gain exposure, valuable feedback, master pitch presentation and attract capital.  Most importantly it is an exercise for the trainees to demonstrate their ability to implement the skills gained during their tenure at AVEC.

The competition was the second phase of a three-pronged project and saw proposals from seven teams who are looking to make their mark in the business market, and relishing the opportunity for growth and future investments. Other facets of the project were the preparation and execution phase.

Ms. Tracy Wattley, Guidance Counselor and Trainee Services Director said that the business component of the project syllabus encourages entrepreneurship and gives participants the tools necessary to open and manage their own businesses. “This project consists of three sections; The Preparation, The Pitch and The Execution. The preparation section includes a prep party as well as different preparation seminars. These seminars will consist of but are not limited to public speaking, networking, leadership etc,” stated Ms. Wattley.

She continued, “Once successfully gaining capital for their businesses, the execution section will run for ten weeks. Within those ten weeks there will be an open evening and a charitable event. This will give the participants a chance to explore their business and managerial skills.”

The winner(s) of the project will be announced at the annual graduation ceremony, most viable business, profitable business, best business plan and best business pitch awards will also be distributed. Additionally, individual awards will be awarded for best leadership competencies and best pitch.
