Sweet Revenge: St. Pauls edge Village 2-1

By: SKNFA, Press Release

January 21st, 2019 -- The finalists from last month’s Carnival Cup met for the first time for the year in the Premier League, but this time the result was the reverse. S. L Horsfords St. Pauls United left it late to pull off a 2-0 victory over defending champions Rams Village Superstars on Saturday night at the St. Mary’s Park in Cayon as action in round two of the SKNFA National Bank Premier Leagues continued on the weekend.

Vice-Captain of St. Pauls Jamal Jeffers, commented on the victory and the defensive tenacity displayed by his team. “After we played Village in the finals (of the Carnival Cup last month), we had to re-adjust. The game was 2-2, about to go to penalty and in the dying seconds of the game we gave up a goal which caused Village to win the championships,” Jeffers reminisced. “Communication is key when playing defense.” He slightly regretted giving up a goal so late in the game Saturday and not keeping a clean sheet. “The best thing is to always get a clean sheet. That little moment that we switched off, Village came and scored so we have to be focused 100 percent,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Saturday night’s earlier encounter:

Captain Junique Eddy of Saddlers expressed elation at the victory and what this means for the club. “We won a big game last week versus Spurs so we just wanted to keep up the energy, keep up the tempo. We know that we are still in the thick of things. We are at a point in the table where one decision can put us way back down or way up so we know that we have to fight to the end,” Eddy said. “We made some mistakes in the game tonight that cost us being comfortable in the game. That’s why we had to work up to the last play of the game so we have to keep focused,” he added.
