Break-in at Horsford’s Complex; tenants ask for security

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A recent break-in at the Horsford’s Complex has heightened concerns of tenants and has given rise to further calls for the landlord to consider instituting some form of security.

SKNVibes was informed that employees of Trafalgar Travels, a company located at the Horsford’s Complex on Wellington Road, secured the premises on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12, 2009 and on return to work the following morning they met the building vandalised and equipment stolen.

On arrival in the area, SKNVibes was told that police officers were summoned to the scene and investigations had begun but they had already left the area. Several attempts were made to contact members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s High Command concerning the investigations, but on each occasion this media house was told that they were either in a meeting or out of office.

Subsequent communication with the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Cromwell Henry, revealed that the matter is still being investigated.

The bottom left glass pane in the front door was smashed, held together only by the layer of tint, while the lock for the door was destroyed which allowed the vandals to gain access to the premises, from which they stole one desktop computer.

Investigations made by this media house revealed that in recent years, tenants of the Complex have been victims of quite a number of break-ins, some being broken into four times or more.

SKNVibes interviewed a number of tenants and, across the board, the chorus was identical; there is undeniable need for some form of security to reduce the likelihood of these unwanted and unwarranted incidents.

Wallace Wilkin, Marketing Executive for S L Horsfords Group of Companies [which owns and oversees the Horsfords Complex] told SKNVIbes exclusively that the company is aware of the situation and would take steps to arrive at a workable solution.

“There is constant interaction with the tenants of the complex and quite obviously we are going to continue to pursue those interactions so that we can come to a situation where everyone is fairly satisfied with the security at the complex. We intend to meet with the tenants and see how best we can move forward in a satisfactorily secured complex,” Wilkin expressed.

The complex, according to Wilkin, currently houses approximately 12 businesses including Horsfords Valu Mart.
