By: (PRESSSEC), Press Release

February 5th, 2019 -- The Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) – Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis – heads a delegation to Montevideo, Uruguay, where an international conference focusing on the ongoing political upheaval in Venezuela starts this week.

At the international conference, Prime Minister Harris will be joined by fellow CARICOM Heads of Government, namely the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Honourable Mia Mottley, and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. the Honourable Keith Rowley.  This marks the second leg of their successful international diplomacy mission surrounding Venezuela.

Early last week, the three Prime Ministers visited the United Nations in New York for discussions with key global stakeholders, such as the UN Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr. António Guterres, as well as the President of the UN General Assembly, Her Excellency Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, who is the first woman from the Latin America and Caribbean region to preside over the Assembly.

The CARICOM delegation’s mission to Uruguay was decided upon last Friday, February 1st during the second special meeting on Venezuela that was organized by the Heads of Government in the space of a week.

During Friday’s meeting, CARICOM’s Heads of Government, Foreign Affairs Ministers and other attendees, including representatives of the CARICOM Secretariat, held the consensus that the mission to the United Nations was extremely well put together and provided “sterling representation by the region to the extent that we [CARICOM] now have Mexico and Uruguay joining us in this exercise.”

A statement from Uruguay and Mexico says “the purpose of the conference will be to establish the basis for a new dialogue mechanism that includes all the forces in Venezuela, in order to help restore peace in that country.”

The St. Kitts-Nevis delegation accompanying Prime Minister Harris to Uruguay comprises the Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley who is Minister of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Kaye Bass, and Press Secretary, Ms. Valencia Grant.
