Allen charged with causing death by dangerous driving

Police investigate at scene of incident
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE young man who police held for questioning concerning the hit-and-run accident which left one man dead, has been officially charged with “causing death by dangerous driving”.

A police press release indicates that the charge was preferred against Jevon Allen of Old Road on Friday, August 14, 2009.

According to police explanation, the circumstances which led to Allen’s arrest are that at about 3:15 p.m. on August 11, 2009 at the Farm’s Road and Island’s Main Road junction, motorcar R173 which was driven by him collided with two men, Howard Hensley of Halfway Tree and Keith Brombill of Stapleton Village, who were “doing work in a trench in the road”.

While Hensley’s hip and leg were injured, Brombill succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the District Medical Officer.

Previous reports suggested that after the men were struck, Allen drove the vehicle away from the scene in an attempt to avoid police capture, but a police report indicates that he was caught while in Old Road. It also informs that three other individuals were in the vehicle with Allen but were able to avoid being held by the law enforcement officers.

SKNVibes understands that Allen was taken before the magistrate court where he was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

Meanwhile, police have had no luck in locating the three other individuals who were in the vehicle. Anyone having information pertaining to the whereabouts of these persons, or who may have information relative to the incident, is asked to contact the Sandy Point Police Station at 465-6261.

Information can be given on condition of anonymity and will be handled with the strictest confidence. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Brombill’s life is the second lost to traffic accident for the year; the first being that of 44-year-old Pincheon Hanley who was struck by a motor jeep while attempting to get from the northern side of Pond Road to the southern. That incident took place on May 16. Hanley succumbed to his injuries at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.
