BASSETERRE, St Kitts – ATTORNEY-AT-LAW and People's Action Movement caretaker for Constituency Two, Jonel Powell has condemned domestic violence in all forms, resultant of a dispute that left one person dead and another hospitalised with multiple stab wounds.

Powell, while speaking with local media house WINN FM, denounced violence in all forms emphasizing that such behaviour is “unacceptable” in society.

“...domestic violence in particular is something that is very troubling. It tends to be incidents that are personal and tend to have a more traumatic effect on families in particular.”

His comments came one day after police responded to a report of a domestic dispute between Leroy Henry and his wife Unella Henry of Upper Malone Avenue, McKnight.

In a press statement, the Police Force stated that on arriving at the scene offices had found Mr. Henry stabbing his wife.

The statement said that an office requested Henry to desist in his actions, but in the process he attempted to slit his throat and was shot.

Henry was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Officer, while his wife was rushed to the JNF Hospital where she is said to be in a stable condition.

Powell noted that the incident highlights that a family is currently in distress, mourning the loss of a loved one.

The politician reminded that there are available avenues where individuals or couples could visit if they are seeking assistance for a marital disagreement, rather than resorting to violence.

“...we have professionals who can offer counselling; you can go to a pastor or some family member. At the end of the day, domestic violence is something that affects the breakdown of the family unit,” he noted.

Directing his advice to persons who are currently in abuse relationships, Powell urged that they should seek counselling. He however noted that it is easier said than done to get those persons to seek help.

Powell reminded that it is not only women who are abused in St. Kitts and Nevis, and opined that “regard of which way it goes, it is unacceptable”.

The Ambassador said he is willing to lend his support in dealing with the problem of domestic violence.

Member of Parliament for Constituency Two, the Hon. Marcella Liburd extended her full support to all members of society who could come up with new initiatives and strategies to combat the problem of domestic violence.

“The incidents of domestic violence are far more prevalent than we think. But we speak out only when incidents like this occur and then there is silence. We must speak up and speak out against domestic violence in all its forms, not just today but continuously,” she said.

Liburd called for all to give support to the victims of domestic abuse.
