BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – KITTITIAN recording artiste Mykal Somer will be among a number of major Reggae and Soca artistes to be featured on Atlanta’s Carifest.
The event will be held on Saturday (Aug. 23) and some of the acts will include Freddie McGregor, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Tanya Stephens and Etana.
Somer will be performing at the after party of the event which will also include performances by Troublesum, Singer J and Nova.
He told SKNVibes that his career is going great and things are finally looking up for him.
“I was in Jamaica for three months working on some new music and some links. I will be doing some recording with Dean Frazer starting next month,” he said. “He works with artistes such as Taurus Riley and Duane Stephenson etc., so I’m really looking forward to that.”
On August 26, Somer will also be a part of another event dubbed “Roots Culture Fest” featuring Joseph Israel and the Israel Band, whose music is said to be as powerful and pre-eminent as that of the late great Bob Marley.
He also has two more gigs planned - one on August 29 and the other on September 4.
“I think my career is going in the right direction; it’s moving slow but I’ll get there,” he said.
He is focused on getting a new album completed which will showcase his talents and potential, as he aims to make it into the international markets “so I can set a foundation for myself and others”.
Somer is a song writer and musician who was born and raised in Half-Way-Tree Village but left St. Kitts in 1998 for Atlanta.
One of his recent hits, ‘Got your message’, blew up the airways both locally and internationally. He also produced the video of that hit in St. Kitts which featured Vanessa Hamilton of St. Croix, who was a star of College Hill season four, on BET.
Somer said his style of music is roots and soul as he always sings songs that have a positive message.
He released his first album, ‘Element of Surprise’, in 2003.
