St. Kitt and Nevis Signs EC$15M Renewable Energy Programme with EU

Press Release

Bridgetown, WL Ares (2019) 25 February 2019 -- St. Kitts and Nevis has signed a Sector Budget Support Programme with the European Union for 5 million euros (EC$15.437M) aimed at supporting the country in advancing towards energy self-sufficiency from local renewable energy sources. The overall objective of the programme is to develop a sustainable energy sector through the increased integration of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in public facilities.

This three-year programme will also support the Government in its attempt to build resilience within the energy and water sectors, to ensure that the population has access to the basic needs of water and electricity when the country is severely impacted by exogenous shocks such as hurricanes.

Some specific outcomes will include the installation of energy efficient street lights, the installation of underground electrical power supply to three pumping stations and the establishment of an Energy Unit.

The contribution from the European Union is strongly aligned with the country's efforts and plans to promote sustainable economic development and faster economic growth through a linked series of policy initiatives and specific investments in the energy sector. This ensures that the Government continues on its path towards reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.

The need for this Programme became even more apparent following the passing of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017 as  St. Kitts and Nevis, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), continues to grapple with the effects of Climate Change and environmental degradation  which is exacerbated by the occurrence of   natural disasters.

The programme will also support private sector development and participation in the renewable energy sector. In particular it will support specific economic investments and energy reforms which promote business opportunities.
