Month of Activities in March in St. Kitts-Nevis dedicated to observance of International Women’s Day 2019

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 05, 2019 (SKNIS): In celebration of International Women’s Day 2019 on March 08, a number of activities have been organized by the Department of Gender Affairs.

Minister with responsibility for Gender Affairs, the Honourable Wendy Phipps, said that the activities will span the entire month to “maximize awareness and sensitization of the public to women’s issues.”

On Sunday, March 03, the Staff of the Department of Gender Affairs worshipped at the Catholic Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on East Independence Square.

An airing of documentaries on the oldest woman in St. Kitts and Nevis and Project Viola (Teen Mothers’ Programme) is to be scheduled in March.

Nine women will be recognized for their contribution to national development during an annual awards ceremony which will be held on March 08 at Government House.

On March 11, there will be a distribution of care packages to the eight women currently in prison.

The staff of the Department of Gender Affairs will appear on the radio-television show “Working for You” on March 06. The topic will be “Women’s Contribution to the Economy.”

There will be presentations made at schools and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) on March 15.

A one-day Post-Launch Consultation on the Domestic Violence Complaints & Response Protocol was held on March 21. The project launch was in November 2018.

A number of activities are also being planned on Nevis to mark the 2019 International Women’s Day.

“The staging of our International Women’s Day 2019 celebrations would have been impossible without the dedication and hard work of the small staff at the Department of Gender Affairs,” said Minister Phipps. “Led by Mrs. Celia Christopher, Director of Gender Affairs, the Department has endeavoured to develop activities that are relevant, timely, practical and meaningful. These programmes fall within the wider mandate of the Department, which focuses on advocacy for gender-based development within the Federation. The Federal Government uses this opportunity to applaud Mrs. Christopher and her team for their magnanimous efforts.”
