Brantley debunks rumour of PAP Programme’s closure

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE Premier of Nevis, Hon. Mark Brantley, has dispelled rumours of the closure of the Federal Government’s Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP).

While addressing reporters at his latest press conference, Brantley denied speculations that the programme is coming to an end despite a notice saying payment would be made on Tuesday (Mar. 5) at the Elquemedo Willet Park.

“I am not aware of any end or cessation. People have been getting their cheques religiously and we will continue. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen a notice that has gone out that says when the next cheques are going out,” explained Brantley.

Brantley’s comment came against the backdrop of a social media post that suggested the programme was coming to an end.

That post came two months after the programme was launched to assist households deemed to be on the poverty line.

Launched in December last, the programme seeks to provide a $500 monthly stipend to households earning less than EC$3,000.

According to media reports, there are over 3000 successful households that have benefited from the programme so far.

Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris, who also holds the portfolio of Finance Minister, recently confirmed that over $3M has been paid out, while noting that his Government had budgeted $24 million for the programme.

According to reports, cheques were paid in St. Kitts on Saturday (Mar. 2)
