BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Authority of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has expressed grief at the horrific massacre that claimed the lives of 50 people in New Zealand.

In expressing solidarity with the families of those who died in Friday’s (Mar. 15) mass shooting, Chairman of the Authority, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said the shooter deliberately targeted a place of sanctity and spiritual comfort for the Muslim community.

He noted that with reports of women and children among the dead filled hearts with a deep sorrow.

Reports coming out of Christ Church states that a gunman – Australian by birth – had entered two separate mosques and opened fire on the worshippers.

Media reports confirmed that 34 people are still hospitalised, with 12 of that figure in critical condition.

“We abhor any form of violence and act of terror against any race, ethnicity, religion or creed and we are unanimous in our resolve that no act of terror will ever change the values of free nations.

“New Zealand has been a staunch development partner and close friend of the Caribbean and we will be there for you today, tomorrow and for all the days to come,” Gonsalves said.

With a picture of the “dark day” coming to light, the Prime Minister is considering an outright ban on semi-automatic weapons similar to the one used by the shooter.

Meanwhile, CARICOM has also expressed it sympathy over the killing.

In a statement, the Community said it “is shocked and appalled by the horrific attack on the two Mosques”.

It condemned the “savage act of terrorism” perpetrated at places of worship, pointing out that “no ideology or philosophy could justify such gruesome acts”.

“Our Community stands in solidarity today with the Government and people of New Zealand, a country renowned for its diversity and tranquility. We are confident that this horrendous incident will strengthen the traditional values of peace and harmony for which New Zealand is well-known.”
