BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 18, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- The historic Patsy Allers Playfield in West Basseterre is about to receive the much needed upgrades thanks to the untiring efforts of Team Unity’s Caretaker for St. Christopher Three (West Basseterre), Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett.
“The Team Unity Administration has taken a deliberate decision, through my appointment as Caretaker of the constituency, to demonstrate its intent to keep its commitment to the people of West Basseterre,” said the Hon Byron-Nisbett. “And so I have and will continue to lobby the respective line ministers to make certain that the constituency of West Basseterre benefits equally from the resources of the Government,”
Addressing a huge turnout at the Public Session of the third annual Peoples Labour Party (PLP) National Convention on Saturday March 16 at the Patsy Allers Playfield, Senator Akilah Byron-Nisbett who is also the Deputy National Political Leader of the PLP said that she has been lobbying to have West Basseterre’s sporting infrastructure upgraded and that work has already begun on the basketball court at the Boyd’s playfield which will be completed shortly.
“But the lobbying for sporting facilities has not ended there,” she said. “Right here on the Patsy Allers playfield, home of 2018 National Bank Premier league, carnival cup and soon to be Easter cup champions, the Village Superstars, I have been lobbying for an upgrade to these facilities.”
Acknowledging the fact that the Sports Department’s resources are limited and even as she continues to lobby the Ministry of Sports, she advised that she has engaged the corporate community to forge partnerships to achieve some of the necessary upgrades.
“Through partnership with a local corporate citizen, I am pleased to announce that the plans have been finalised and approved for work to commence on rebuilding the facilities behind us and providing the team and the school by extension, proper bathrooms, locker rooms and a small bar area,” announced the Team Unity Caretaker for St. Christopher Three.
“The corporate partner and I have agreed that the related labour for the construction of these facilities will be staffed by constituents. However, let me remind my good friend the Hon. Deputy Prime Minister Shawn K. Richards that there is still some more work to be done and I will be looking to the Ministry to complete the resurfacing of the field and the installation of proper lighting as promised.”
Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett who was accorded a standing ovation by the large turnout at the Public Session of the PLP 2019 National Convention after being introduced by the Hon Hazel Brandy-Williams, Junior Minister for Health and Gender Affairs in the Nevis Island Administration, also talked of the highly successful Hurricane Relief Programme.
“An impactful initiative undertaken by the Team Unity Administration and for which I am proud to be associated with, is the Hurricane Relief programme which was birthed to bring relief to home owners receiving damages following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria,” said the Hon Byron-Nisbett. “Since the introduction of this programme we have seen 150 homeowners in West Basseterre benefitting thus far.”
Of the on-going initiatives, she commended the Team Unity Administration’s continuing efforts to identify more land for future housing development in West Basseterre, saying that land has been identified in Boyd’s which will be distributed shortly. According to the Hon Byron-Nisbett, approval is also being sought for land to be made available in the Dewar’s area with an area identified for the building of townhouses and an area where land will be distributed.
