Roadtown, Tortola - Government will commission the traffic lights and signals located at the intersection of Admin and Waterfront Drives and the Road Town Roundabout during a ceremony on Thursday, August 20, at 10:00 a.m.

Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Julian Fraser, RA told the Department of Information and Public Relations “we are finally pleased to announce that the traffic lights will be commissioned.  This is something that we needed, as we try to ensure that systems are in place to relieve traffic congestion in Road Town.”

Once the lights are turned on motorists are expected to obey the traffic signals and pedestrians are expected to use the cross walks.

“Motorists and pedestrians are reminded that they have a part to play in relieving the traffic congestion in Road Town and as such should endeavour to be responsible and considerate” the minister said.

As Government prepares to commission the traffic signals motorists should be aware that once they enter the roundabout they will have the right of way until they reach their exit, as long as they do not make a complete circle and wish to cross the point where they entered. Persons wishing to cross that point will have to yield to motorists with the green light.  Therefore, it is important for persons have a clear idea of where they are going before entering the roundabout.

Pedestrians are also encouraged to use the cross walks correctly by waiting for the signal to walk once the button is engaged.  Pedestrians are strongly advised not to walk when the traffic lights are green.

In the midst of final preparations for the commissioning of the Territory’s second and third set of traffic lights and signals, the community is being encouraged to act responsibly by using the pedestrian cross walks, refraining from obstructing traffic especially in the vicinity of the traffic lights, and knowing how to traverse the roundabout and adhering to traffic signals and signs at all times.

On March 13, 2009 the Government signed a contract with JoClaud Enterprises Limited for the installation of traffic lights and signals at the Road Town Roundabout and at the intersection of Admin and Waterfront Drives in an effort to relieve the traffic congestion and to provide a more pedestrian friendly capital.
