Mantab, St. Peters, Spurs register wins

Action between Spurs and Cayon on Saturday
By: SKNFA, Press Release

March 22nd, 2019 -- Mantab, St. Peters and Garden Hotspurs each recorded wins on the weekend in the SKNFA National Bank Premier League. On Saturday at the Warner Park, Hobson Enterprise Garden Hotspurs got a big win over former champions Flow 4G Cayon Rockets. Spurs went ahead in the 62nd minute through a Kishawn Francis strike, but Cayon restored parity with a 75th minute strike and almost went ahead minutes later. Giovannie Lake however made sure the victory belong to the team from Central Basseterre rocketing a shot into the back of the net in the 89th minute.

Coach Austin Huggins is obviously pleased with four victories on the trot for his club. He said increased training has been the reason for the good results.  “We’ve been getting more players consistently attending training. We are able to train more. We get a lot of tactical stuff done, most importantly on the defense. We have been holding out very strong, numbers behind the ball, players being aggressive and trying to win back the ball and counter attack,” explained Huggins. He also noted that the spirit of the players is also improved. “They have been working together as a unit, as a better team and that has spilled on to the field and therefore we’re getting better performances,” he added.

On the other hand, Tyrone O’Loughlin, a member of the Cayon coaching staff, said the loss was a tough one for Cayon. “We went down one nil, but we kept fighting and we got the equalizer and we had a chance to go ahead…unfortunately the fella missed the opportunity to score. It’s a tough loss,” he said. O’Loughlin lamented that the team had a tough season so far losing some of their top players to transfers and injuries but he commended the young players for their tenacity in filling the void. He is still confident Cayon will make the playoffs in the Super Six. “I know we are going to be in the (Super) Six. We just have to keep the youngsters and the experienced guys that we have. I know we have some injuries but we will fight and get there,” he said.
