New President of Mexico marks first 100 days in office

    22nd March, 2019 -- On the 1st of December, 2018, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was sworn in as President of the United Mexican States, armed with a mandate to effect radical transformation to Mexican society. In a speech given by President López Obrador, earlier in March to mark his first 100 days in office, he highlighted some of the most noteworthy accomplishments and initiatives undertaken by his administration, during the aforementioned period.

     

    The Embassy of Mexico to the Eastern Caribbean States is pleased to share with you the following noticeable examples:

     

    In economic matters, the President stated that the peso has recovered, consumer confidence has reached record heights points, federal government revenue is above what was programmed and 220,628 new jobs have been created. Furthermore, he reported improvement in the purchasing power of wages and informed of an agreement which was established to increase the minimum wage by 16 percent. He additionally mentioned that, as this year progresses, at least seven out of every ten poor households in Mexico, will receive support to improve their welfare and, assistance will be provided to all families in indigenous communities. The pension for seniors will double, while people with disabilities have begun to receive a pension.
     
    The President highlighted that his government is not in favour of the use of force to curb migration, but rather considers that the root causes of it should be addressed. Therefore, Mexico is working on a development cooperation agreement for Central America with the government of the United States. Also the government promotes and respects human rights and is determined to fulfill the commitment to establish the whereabouts of the young people who disappeared in Ayotzinapa. The Government created a Truth Commission for this purpose.
     
    Importantly, he informed that the process is underway to approve a reform to eliminate the constitutional privileges of the President of the Republic and to allow for the President to be tried in office for corruption and other crimes.
     
    Moreover, as it pertains to the youth, 82,142 young people are already working as apprentices in a new program launched by this administration. In addition, nine million scholarships will be awarded to poor students of all school levels, while 100 public universities are in the process of being established.
     
    The President mentioned that the Planting Life Program is already underway. This year, 575 thousand hectares of fruit and timber trees will be planted, and next year it will be one million hectares.
     
    In regard to foreign policy, President López Obrador underlined the willingness of his administration to maintain friendly relations with all the peoples and governments of the world.
