Grant calls recent political attacks disconcerting

By: VonDez Phipps, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS political tensions in the Federation continue to intensify in the run-up to General Elections, the St. Kitts opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM) party has alleged a number of politically-motivated attacks against it.

Speaking to SKNVibes yesterday (Aug. 19), Leader of PAM Lindsay Grant informed that while having lunch with the attorneys representing his party in the ongoing constituency boundaries case, an individual was spotted recording the private conversation.

“While eating at [the Ocean Terrace Inn] OTI, as we do for every break for lunch, we were tape recorded by an individual unknown to us. Somebody came upon an individual who was taping our conversations back of the wall that we usually eat at. When that individual came towards him, he ran,” Grant recounted.

At the lunch were lead counsel in the case Mia Mottley QC, Camilla Persaud-Bissessar, Constance Mitchum, Marguerita Foreman and four others. According to Grant, the attorneys were discussing the day’s proceedings and the team’s strategy for the next step forward.

Grant said that while it is difficult to take action due to the identity of the individual being unknown, it is important for his party to bring it to the awareness of the public.

“We are very concerned about it because everybody knows that this is a heightened period right now. Because of the cases it is important for us to get the public aware of what’s happening,” he said.

On Monday (Aug. 17), a press release from the Royal St. Christopher & Nevis Police Force confirmed that Grant’s Constituency Four Office on Main Street in Old Road was broken into. The PAM Leader claimed that the break-in may have been an attack on his party, but indicated that no important documents were removed from the building.

“They didn’t get at my important information, but it was broken into and they got into the building,” he informed.

The PAM Leader reported that his staff spoke to the police about the incident, but he indicated that he does not expect “to get any results in terms of finding out who the individual or individuals that broke into the office are”.

Grant said he and his party are considering beefing up security measures for the attorneys and the constituency office, as the political arena is expected to continue on its current trend until General Elections are held.
