Cotton Ground man found guilty of killing schoolgirl

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – REESE WALTERS of Cotton Ground, Nevis was yesterday (May 3) found guilty for the September 2014 murder of 15-year-old Shante Claxton of Jessups Village, Nevis.

According to a police communiqué, the verdict was unanimous and the 26-year-old was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison awaiting his sentence hearing.

On the afternoon of Saturday, September 6, 2014, one of Claxton’s relatives had reportedly discovered her lifeless body in or near the St. Thomas’ Primary School’s bathroom.

Information gathered by this media house at that time suggests that she had left for church that morning and when she did not return within a specific time, her relatives began searching for her.

And that search led to her remains being found.

Her demise led to a national outcry for justice, which included that of then Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and Deputy Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Ark Brantley.

However, sleuths from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force worked tirelessly on the incident and soon thereafter three men were taken into custody to assist with investigations.

Two of them were subsequently released and, the third one, Reese Walters, according to a police report, had confessed to killing Claxton and was charged with Murder and Attempted Unlawful Carnal Knowledge on Sunday, September 14, 2014 and remanded to prison.
