BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE People’s Action Movement’s (PAM) candidate for Constituency Number One, Glenroy Blanchette, has sent out a challenge to Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin for a public debate.

In a letter dated August 20, 2009 and addressed to Dr. Martin, Blanchette wrote, “As another General Election approaches, the general public has been agitating for public debates on the issues of the day. I believe that both of us owe the public, especially the electorate of Constituency 1, an explanation of our personal or Party position on matters relevant to their wellbeing. I further believe that the Constituents should be given the opportunity to make an informed assessment of persons running for public office.”

Blanchette further stated that he humbly invites Dr. Martin to a public debate In Constituency Number One and declared that “I am available at any time for the debate”.

“Please feel free to contact me at your convenience so that we can work out the details of the event. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation as we strive to raise the standard of politics in our Nation,” he added.

Dr. Martin is the current Minister of Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Postal Services and the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s candidate and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number One.

Ever since the US election campaign started, which resulted in the making of history with the first African-American to be elected President, many political leaders have voiced their approval in the manner which Obama responded to the mud-slinging and character assassination thrown at him by his opponents.

Many eyes were transfixed on the TV screen to witness the results of numerous debates between Obama and McCain, in which the former was victorious. He was praised, honoured and revered for his astuteness, intelligence and sagacity by many Caribbean politicians including President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Ministers Patrick Manning and Dr. Denzil Douglas as well as Mark Brantley and Lindsay Grant.

Today, we see Blanchette sending out his challenge for a public debate, but he is not the only one to have done so. For quite some time the Leader of the PAM, Lindsay Grant, has been calling on PM Douglas for a public debate on issues affecting the nation. However, this challenge has yet to be accepted. Therefore, could the acceptance of Blanchette’s challenge be the turning point in the political landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis.
