Government congratulates nurses of St. Kitts and Nevis on International Nurses’ Day

By: (SKNIS), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 14, 2019 (SKNIS): Minister of State with responsibility for Health, Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, Honourable Wendy Phipps, during her address to the nation in commemoration of International Nurses’ Day 2019 on May 12, took the opportunity, on behalf of her ministries and the Government of National Unity, to congratulate all nurses of the twin-island Federation.

“The Government, and in particular, our Ministry of Health, acknowledges fully that jobs in the nursing field are anything but slight undertakings,” she said. “All of our dedicated, knowledgeable and conscientious nurses know quite well what it means to be fully vested in the care and management of their patients.  They are also aware of the direct correlation between the level of consistent, high quality nursing care and positive, rehabilitative health outcomes for patients under their care and supervision.”

Minister Phipps stated that “more than doctors, medical specialists and allied healthcare professionals, nurses are the ones in constant contact with patients, particularly those whose care are being managed in a hospital setting.”

“The same can be said of our dedicated nurses who toil in the community-based health care setting: these are the ones rendering primary healthcare to our community residents who utilize our Nation’s 17 health centers,” she said. “As such, it goes without saying that our national health care infrastructure would collapse without strong, consistent support from our nurses who practice in both the public and private sectors.”

This year’s celebration was observed under the theme “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Health for All”.
