BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER seven elusive years in their hunt for a trophy, members of the S-Krave Newtown United Football Club finally  gained success when they defeated RAMS Village Superstars in the Finals of the 2019 FA Cup.

In a tense battle at the Warner Park Football Stadium on Wednesday (May 15), a Devaughn Elliot’s 48th minute strike ensured that the East Basseterre club won its first trophy since winning the Premier League in 2012.

The gamed ended 2-1 as the Superstars failed in their bid to add another trophy to the two they already won for this season.

Newtown drew first blood when Jayan Duncan found the back of the nets in the 36th minute. However, four minutes later, Travis Rogers scored the equaliser through a free kick at close range.

Not to be outdone, in the second half, Elliot netted Newtown’s second goal which was enough for his team to cart off the trophy.

A few minutes later, Newtown was down to 10 men as Kejaune David, in the 57th minute, had received his second yellow card of the match.

The latter stages of the match saw a scuffle between players, which resulted in to RAMS Village Superstars’ Assistant Coach Alexis Richards being expelled from the technical area in the 84th minute.

Coach Earl Jones said the win was significant to the Newtown community and the team after not wining anything for such a long time.

“Words can’t explain…the community has been begging over and over since 2012 just to get the right group of ‘fellas’ together, keep them in tact and we would be victorious.”

Jones was of the strong view that the victory showed his team appeared to be the only one that could have matched Village Superstars.

“Maybe saying this might give the other teams a boost and pep in their step. I will say it frankly; it looks like it’s only Newtown that can stop Village.”

Village Superstars Coach, Stephen Clarke congratulated the Newtown players and declared that his team did not play with the same hunger as the winners.

“Congrats to the champions, we didn’t play Village football at all. We didn’t play like we really wanted it, and I guess the team that played like they wanted it more actually won the game.”

Meanwhile, despite a spirited fight back from H E Garden Hotspurs, the team went under to KFC United Old Road Jets 3-2 on Wednesday evening in the latest action of the SKNFA Premier League.

Playing on a warm evening at Warner Park, Jahren Leader netted a double inside 33 minutes to put the Old Road 2-0, scoring in the 25th  and 33rd minutes.

Tiquanny Williams added a third in the 37th minute to put pressure on Spurs.

Spurs however fought back into the game when Rakeal Allen in the 46th minute and Rovan Wigley in the 79th minute netted, but they could not have found the equaliser.
