CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE annual summer programme run by the Department of Sport came to an end with a simple ceremony on Friday (Aug. 21) at the netball complex in Charlestown.

Minister of Sport Hon. Hensley Daniel told the youths who participated in four disciplines over the two-week period that the camp was a strategic initiative to ensure that sports on Nevis does not die. He said learning the basics now would ensure they continue playing for years to come, and that investments like this were made to prevent them from joining gangs.

The Minister pointed out that this summer had been a particularly busy one for the Ministry of Sport with the Bank of Nevis Cricket Clinic, the Football Coaching Clinic, Camp Refresh and now this. While thanking parents for their support, Minister Daniel promised that his Ministry would continue to ensure programmes are put in place so that children could play games outdoor instead of on the computer or television.

The disciplines covered this year were Cricket, Football, Netball and Tennis but Director of Sport Lincoln Barry promised that Baseball, Basketball and Golf will be added next year.

The simple ceremony also saw reports by coaches of each discipline.
