By: Peter Ngunjiri, Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, May 31, 2019 (DBSKN) -- The St. Kitts Cricket Masters team which is preparing to take part in this year’s edition of the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament that takes place in Antigua from Friday June 7 to Sunday June 9 has thanked the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for its generous sponsorship.

The financial institution has contributed EC$10,000 to the team, which will be one of the eight teams from the Leeward Islands that will be taking part in the tournament. Mr Anthony A. Rawlins, Secretary General of the St. Kitts Cricket Masters, in thanking the Development Bank said that the bank’s support for cricket at all levels of the game is highly commendable.

“It is a T-20 format tournament and we have eight countries and territories taking part, namely hosts Antigua, Nevis, St. Maarten, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Anguilla, Tortola, and St. Kitts,” noted Mr Rawlins on Monday May 27 when he received the sponsorship cheque from Ms Vernitha Maynard, Marketing Officer, Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, at the bank’s headquarters on Church Street in Basseterre.

According to Mr Rawlins, the Leeward Island Masters Cricket tournament, which started in 1998 and caters for players 39 years old and over, was the brainchild of Mr Alikin Rogers of Anguilla. He noted that Mr Rogers’ intention was to keep the game of cricket in the Leeward Islands going on strong using persons who would have played in their younger years.

The St. Kitts Masters Cricket team will be managed by Captain Ramona Isles, and captained by Greg Stanley. Players on the team are Codville Rogers, Jutin Kumar Patel, Alphonso Hendrickson, Garfield Rogers, Charles Morton, Jason Saddler, Bernard Island, Austin Williams, Kevin Hanley, Sherman White, Bertell Harris, Shawn Liburd, Kenneth Douglas, Lionel Phillip Webbe, Junie Mitchum, and Harwood Williams.

St. Kitts has never won the Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament championship and on their chances of winning the trophy this year, Mr Rawlins was philosophical: “Nevis is the defending champion and we are hoping that St. Kitts and Nevis will be in the finals, and once the Federation wins it that is our main concern.”
