5 June 2019 -- British Airways is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, as well as 65 years of service between the UK and Barbados. To mark this achievement the airline partnered with the British High Commission to stage a photo competition. Members of the public in Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines were invited through social media to send in photos that reflected the spirit of the UK. Over 200 entries were submitted between the launch of the competition on 22 March and its close on 30 April 2019.

Aspiring Bajan photographer Ashli Thomas snapped up the top prize of two flights to the UK and three nights’ accommodation and will later this year be winging her way to London. She received her prize from British Airways Regional Manager Nigel Blackett and British High Commissioner Janet Douglas at a ceremony at Mrs Douglas’s official residence. Also present were other participants in the competition.

Ashli’s winning image depicted two people enjoying tea and a beer, while watching a local game of 20/20 cricket. Judges from BA and the British High Commission sifted through the photos and agreed that Ashli’s winning shot perfectly captured the spirit of the UK. They also nominated runners up and honourable mentions, who were presented with Certificates of Participation and a bag of keepsakes.

British High Commissioner Janet Douglas said, “We have been impressed and delighted by the number and quality of the photos submitted. And we are happy to partner with British Airways in this year of significant anniversaries for them.”

Nigel Blackett of British Airways said, “BA is proud of its commitment to serving Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and to preserving and building the links that bind us together. Well done to Ashli on her winning entry!”
