By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Government is currently on a thrust to address the “Future of Work” in St. Kitts and Nevis by reviewing the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions with a view of ratifying outstanding issues.

The announcement came from Minister of Labour Vance Amory, who is currently in Geneva, Switzerland attending the 108th International Conference of Labour.

The Senior Minister explained that the Federation’s officials have begun the process of encouraging people to prepare for the inevitable change in the structure of work.

This, according to the Minister, is being done by developing training programmes and the retraining of people to equip them for the future of work.

“In addition, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education, in conjunction with the National Tripartite Committee, have established a new structure to upgrade all workers and prepare them to meet the challenges which confront them in respect of the future of work.”

While addressing the assembly, Minister Amory pointed out that “the future of work is about people, about families”, with the transformation being [sic] about changing the attitude and culture of people to accept the change and equip themselves to adapt to the new environment in the world of work.

He noted that the future of work is about improving the quality of life of the people of the St. Kitts and Nevis, even in the challenges posed by the changing socio-economic and the political environment.

“The discussions we’ve had at the National level has been inclusive of all stakeholders to ensure the broad consensus of tri-partism [sic]…St. Kitts and Nevis recognises the importance of ensuring that the institutions of learning are geared towards lifelong learning to strengthen this new strategy to prepare the workforce to adapt to the new opportunities which will be created in the future,” the Minister added.

Minister Amory told the meeting that the future of work must be focused on young people seeking to identify their talents and their skills and entrepreneurial capacities to become self-employed using the technology that already exists.

The ILO Conference runs from June 10-21.
