BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MONTHS after the February incident involving R&B American singer Chris Brown and Bajan ‘princess’ Rihanna, the case is finally over and Brown was yesterday (Aug. 25) sentenced to five years probation and six months community labour for beating his former girlfriend.
The incident stemmed from an argument between the two after leaving a party in Los Angeles, which lead into a physical altercation in a car resulting in Brown punching Rihanna in the face. She ran and called 911 and he left the scene.
According to CaribWorldNews.com, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg also ordered 20-year-old Brown to stay at least 100 yards away from the singer. If Brown violates the order and the terms of his sentence, he could be sent to state prison.
The judge said she wanted to ensure that Brown performs physical labour instead of mentoring young people and also ordered that he undergo a year of domestic violence counselling.
Brown will serve his sentence in his home state, Virginia, and his community labour will be overseen by the police chief in Richmond.
The court also heard in a probation report of two other incidents where Brown got physical with the ‘Umbrella’ singer prior to the February incident, but which were not reported.
According to the Associated Press, the probation report said that the first incident happened about three months before the February beating while the couple was travelling in Europe; Rihanna slapped Brown during an argument, and he shoved her into a wall. In the second instance, Brown allegedly broke the front and passenger side windows on a Range Rover they were driving while visiting Barbados.
