PM Douglas reiterates policy of consultation with citizens

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, AUGUST 25TH 2009 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has re-iterated his Labour Administration’s consultative approach to government in its policy of transparency, good governance and accountability.
     
    “Many of our listeners, for example, have participated in our annual Face-to-Face sessions, where our entire cabinet makes themselves available, in a public setting, to sit with anyone and everyone who shows up for these public sessions, and to respond to any question, on any topic, presented by members of the public,” said Prime Minister Douglas during his weekly radio programme.
     
    “This had never been done before the Labour Party formed the government.  In addition, we all have, on a weekly basis, this opportunity for contact and exchange, via this “Ask the Prime Minister” programme,” said Dr. Douglas.
     
    The one-hour programme which affords listeners the opportunity to call in and ask Prime Minister Douglas questions and make suggestions is syndicated simultaneously on five x radio stations – ZIZ Radio, Radio One, Kyss FM, Choice FM and Sugar City Roc.
     
    "Ask the Prime Minister" which debuted in October 2008 is one of a series of ongoing programmes of transparency, good governance and accountability to interact with the people initiated by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government since it took office in July 1995.
     
    The other programmes include “Face to Face” which allows the Prime Minister and all his Ministers to sit in a Town Hall setting and field questions from persons in the audience, via the telephone or the internet; the Monthly Prime Minister’s Press Conference, the Post Cabinet Briefings, which informs of the issues discussed and the decisions taken in the Cabinet; more regular meetings of the National Assembly, live television coverage of the National Assembly meetings, the National Consultation on the Economy, the establishment of the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM), the establishment of the Prime Minister’s Website, constituency clinics at Saddlers and St. Paul’s and the consultation with stakeholders on draft legislation before passage in the lawmaking body.
     
    Prime Minister Douglas also meets regularly with ordinary persons and the business community as well as with nationals in cities overseas where thre is a significant number of nationals residing.
