    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (MARCH 8TH 2004)
    – Independent taxi drivers, who are not members of the St. Kitts Taxi Association and the Liamuiga Taxi Association, have agreed to meet with officials of the St. Kitts Scenic Railway to discuss the use of privately-owned buses owned by the railway company to move cruise ship passengers.
     
    Representatives from the taxi drivers also raised the erection of a fence on the public sidewalk in front of Sealoft at Frigate Bay in their meeting with St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas.
     
    The taxi drivers said while they appreciated the significant increase in cruise passenger arrivals to St. Kitts with the introduction of the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, they felt taxi men should share in the benefits that accrue bearing in mind the promise made by the owners that they would allow taxi operators to move passengers from the cruise ship pier to the train station.
     
    The taxi drivers also welcomed the operations of the Royal St. Kitts Marriott Beach Resort

    and Casino which has resulted in a significant increase in stayover visitors.
     
    Prime Minister Douglas thanked the taxi drivers for a letter submitted before the meeting and emphasised the importance of the role they play not only in promoting St. Kitts and Nevis, but also in advancing the tourism product in the twin-island Federation.
     
    He said the industry has begun to become very important to the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis as more and more people make it a livelihood.
     
    Like their counterparts in the St. Kitts Taxi Association and the Liamuiga Taxi Association, the independent taxi drivers agreed to meet with the management of the St. Kitts Scenic Railway to discuss how all can benefit from the operations.
