The Thoroughbreds - a thin line between modelling and stripping

The original members of The Thoroughbreds
By: Suelika N. Creque

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR my friend’s 24th birthday celebration she wanted to attend one of the events the Thoroughbreds were hosting.

The Thoroughbred is a group made up of male models that do a little more than modelling, but not necessarily stripping, and gives a mixture of exotic dancing and modelling.

Alex Cordero, 37, who is originally from the Dominican Republic and has been working in St. Kitts in the hospitality sector for 11 years, is one of the founding members and promoter of the group.

He told SKNVibes that the group was started in 2003 and came about after he first modeled at an event in the TDC Mall organised by Ricki Malcolm.

“She called me aside and told me that she liked the way I modeled,” he said. “I was wearing lingerie and I did a little move and dancing when I came out.”

Malcolm then informed Cordero that a male modelling group could be formed and contacted Vaughn Anslyn of Nevis, also a male model.

“Vaughn was the one that came up with the name Thoroughbred, which means that the members were well built and muscular,” he said.

The group started out with a total of eight members and in July 2003 they travelled to their first overseas gigs in Antigua and St. Lucia.

“We do male fashion shows for ladies only, where we perform by dancing and modelling,” he said.

At one of the ladies only Thoroughbred events, women can expect exotic dancing sexy male bodies and wild behaviour which is purely for entertainment, according to Cordero.

The group has also performed in Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Barbados but is most requested in Barbados and Antigua.

Today, the group only consists of three active members as the other models have moved on to other fields of work.
The members are Cordero, Anslyn and Beco Lapsey.

On Saturday, August 22, the Thoroughbreds held their third event for 2009 at the Lounge and the group plans to continue hosting events as they are still being supported.

Cordero feels that the government of St. Kitts and Nevis should implement some sort of night life entertainment to help attract tourists.

“I think something of what we do on a wider scale is needed. People are being too small minded; they go to other countries and one of the first places they go to are strip clubs,” he said.

“I am not talking about getting naked but at least for exotic dancing with females as well, because in my line of work the tourists complain about not having anything to do here.

Cordero also said that a decent night club with a strict dress code is also needed, noting it would help encourage young people to try and fit in once it is put in place.
