August 22nd, 2019 -- SPBS is proud to nominate the Heart and Hands for Nevis group for its Distinguished Community Service Award. This group has been doing great humanitarian work for its citizens at home and abroad for many years. Come celebrate with the Heart and Hands of Nevis at the SPBS Awards Gala in NY on August 31st. This event will be held under the distinguished patronage of the Honorable Selwyn S. C. Walters.
In November 1999, Hurricane Lenny dealt the island of Nevis a “hard” blow with extensive damage to the entire island. Many Nevisians and their friends in New York were able to assist in relief efforts by sending supplies to Nevis. However, a group of Nevisians in New York felt that much more needed to be done and could be done if individuals banded together to spearhead relief efforts in the Nevisian community. Realizing that they could not be widely effective as individuals, they decided to form themselves into an organization. In this way their effects would be more far-reaching and this would give them the opportunity to approach major corporations and humanitarian entities in an effort to give assistance to Nevis.
Their first meeting was held in December 1999, where hearts and minds came together with similar objectives and goals that would have a positive effect on their beloved Nevis. This was the birth of the organization, Hearts and Hands for Nevis, Inc., which was first started for Emergency Relief. Over the years, however, it has emerged as a humanitarian organization, geared towards assisting in all situations.
The focus of Hearts and Hands for Nevis, Inc. is “to positively impact the lives of Nevisians and friends, through service, with Integrity and excellence”. The organization raises funds to assist Nevisians in the Diaspora and at home. Donations of not only money, but equipment, have been made to the Alexandra Hospital; books to the public library; and supplies to the Flamboyant Home for the Aged. There is an ongoing book drive, “Feed the Mind”, which helps to provide good reading material to libraries and schools so that the children, in particular, can have educational and stimulating reading material. There is an annual “Back to School” drive, which collects school supplies for children in primary schools.
Hearts and Hands for Nevis, not only strives to support and assist situations in Nevis, but is committed to reaching out a helping hand to our Caribbean neighbors. This was evident when Hurricane Maria devastated Dominica in 2017, Hearts and Hands for Nevis sent barrels of supplies to Dominica to help in their relief efforts.
Hearts and Hands for Nevis is comprised of dedicated, hard-working members who are committed to making a difference in the lives of all Nevisians and friends, both at home and in the Diaspora.
