Over five million pounds of scrap metal from derelict vehicles shipped out

By: (SKNIS), Press Release
Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 22, 2019 (SKNIS): In their push towards sustainable development, the green economy and creating an eco-friendly society, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the expertise and hard work of the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC), in 2018, engaged in a project whereby they removed derelict vehicles and shipped them out of the Federation as over five million pounds of metal.

This was revealed by General Manager of SWMC, Keithley Phillip, when he appeared on the radio and television show “Working for You” on August 21.

In describing the process of the derelict vehicle project, Mr. Phillip said, “All the derelict vehicles, we bring them to the land fill, they are compacted, and they are placed in 40 feet containers and they are shipped out.”

Mr. Phillip also went on to note that the location where the new Basseterre High School is being built in Pond’s Estate was one of the major areas where derelict vehicles were cleared from.

He ended by saying that the project “is going extremely well and is one of the things we (Solid Waste Management Corporation) are most proud of.”
