By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FIVE Jamaicans are among some ‘big-name’ international artistes for this year’s Music of Black Origin Awards (MOBO) ceremony slated for the SECC Arena in Glasgow, Scotland on Wednesday, September 30.

According to management of the MOBO, Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Sean Paul, Tarrus Riley and Serani have been nominated for Best Reggae Act. The ‘So Special’ singer, Mavado, took this award last year, reflecting his continued output of quality music and his dominance of the international market, but fans are eagerly waiting to see if he will retain the title.

Sean Paul is also a past winner of this award, and Vybz Kartel, leader of the Portmore Empire, was nominated for the award sometime in the past but had his nomination withdrawn due to homophobic lyrics.

Other categories include Best UK Act, Best UK New Comer, Best R&B and Soul Act, Best Hip Hop Act, Best Video, Best International Act, Best Song, Best, Album, Best Jazz Act, Best African Act and Best Gospel Act.

The MOBO was founded by Kanya King MBE in 1996 and has grown to become Europe’s leading black music brand celebrating music of black origin by honouring established as well as upcoming MOBO artistes.

The MOBO Awards Show also holds the distinction of being one of the most televised black music awards shows in the world today, reaching in excess of 250 million viewers across five continents and 75 countries.
