BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, August 26, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- Peoples Labour Party (PLP) Deputy National Political Leader, Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett, has congratulated members of the PLP Youths for spearheading a humanitarian activity which saw them paint the house of a senior citizen in Lodge Village on Saturday August 24.
Members of the Peoples Labour Party Youths drawn from Constituencies Number Seven and Number Three, led by PLP National Youth Arm Representative Mr Manasses Huggins, had assembled in the lower Ghaut area of Lodge Village from 7:00 am and assisted in painting the outside walls of 65-year-old Ms Dorothy Johnson’s house.
The team of energetic and enthusiastic youths, which also included Ms Katherina Davis, the 2016-2017 Miss National Carnival Queen; Ms Tameka Williams, former national star athlete; and Mr Antonio Wilson, a professional painter, was joined and assisted by the Hon Byron-Nisbett, and the PLP National Organiser, Mr Alexis Nisbett.
“It was such a privilege to be here with the PLP Youths, as they spearheaded an initiative to assist an elderly within the community of Lodge, with getting her house painted,” said Senator Byron-Nisbett. “I would like to congratulate the PLP Youths for taking this initiative and moving forward with assisting those in need as they saw fit.”
The Hon Byron-Nisbett added: “On behalf of the Leadership of the Peoples Labour Party, myself Deputy Leader and the Leader himself who would have been in touch with me to ensure that this event came off successfully, we would just like to thank the young persons for being so involved - for showing that indeed it takes a community to assist in helping each other; we have to be our brother’s keeper and for ensuring that we are able to have some type of togetherness and be able to assist wherever is necessary and whenever necessary.”
According to Senator Byron-Nisbett, who is also Team Unity’s Caretaker for St. Christopher Three (West Basseterre), the PLP Youths have decided that they will also paint a house in Constituency Number Three at a date to be announced. She hailed them for coming out with such an initiative on their own, and to decide that they want to give back in some way.
The house got a fresh and bright coat of orange paint, and when one of the volunteers asked what colour orange signified, she was answered by Ms Katherina Davis who said: “Orange is an uplifting colour that promotes happiness.”
“Let your light shine so men may see your good work,” was the message congratulating the PLP Youths that came from the Peoples Labour Party’s National Political Leader, and Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris.
Dr Harris, who is also the Area Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven, was in Illinois, USA, attending the funeral of the late Ms Esther Garnette, the daughter of former Matron, Nurse Sylvia Garnette of Tabernacle.
PLP National Youth Arm Representative, Mr Manasses Huggins, observed that one of the things the PLP Youths wanted to do in terms of volunteering would be to go in the community and help somebody in need. In the case of Ms Dorothy Johnson, the group liaised with the PLP Constituency Number Seven Women’s Group which is led by Mrs Sonia Henry, who is also the PLP National Women Arm Representative.
“We told them (PLP Women’s Group in Number Seven) to get the names of persons, at least five people, in the community who need assistance in terms of the painting and the first name they came out with was Dorothy Johnson,” explained Mr Huggins. “So that is why we decided to help her out. It is a big house, but we said we are not going to let that deter us, so we will go and do the best to help her out.”
According to Mr Huggins, the youths were excited to help. However a number of them could not make it as they had to work, while the other PLP National Youth Arm Representative, Mr Delonte Lewis, was off island.
“I would like to thank the youths for this great opportunity,” said house owner Ms Dorothy Johnson. “It was a blessing, and I want to thank my Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris very much, and I also want to thank my leader of the women’s group Mrs Sonia Henry. I am very grateful for all of you - everybody - don’t forget Manasses Huggins and Trevlyn Stapleton, and everybody who turned up. I am grateful.”
