Sugar Boyz seek another victory in second international friendly

Sugar Girls crash out of CONCACAF Qualifiers

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER brushing aside Antigua and Barbuda 3-nil in the first of two international friendlies on Sunday (Aug. 26), the Federation’s senior men’s team will be seeking to achieve a similar victory this evening (Aug. 27).

Playing at the Warner Park Football Stadium, Evansroy Barnes opened the Sugar Boyz account in the 9th minute of the game.

Despite the Federation’s goal in the opening exchanges of the game, the visitors put up a spirited fight for the remainder of the first half.

However, they could not stop the rampage of team St. Kitts and Nevis as Niquan Phipps found the back of the net in the 81st minute, while Kimaree Rogers sealed the deal in the 89th minute.

The two teams will return to the same venue at 8 o’clock this evening for the second game.

The two international friendlies are aimed at preparing the Sugar Boyz to begin their quest in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Meanwhile, the Federation’s U-17 Girls have bowed out of the CONCACAF Champions Qualifiers after Belize defeated them 4-3 in a very entertaining encounter on Sunday (Aug. 25).

The Sugar Girls was looking to rebound from their defeat against Barbados on Friday (23), but they did not display a positive attitude in the early part of the match as they quickly slipped behind 2-nil.

The two goals came off the boot of Katie Jones, who went on to score another double in the second half, despite the three netted by a much improved Sugar Girls.

The Sugar Girls needed to win that match in order to qualify, as they had the best goal difference in Group C.

In the other match of that day, the Bajans edged United States Virgin Islands 1-nil but, despite the win, they failed to progress to the CONCACAF Finals.

Belize, by virtue of having a superior goal difference, topped Group C and have qualified for the Finals.
