BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MET officials in the Caribbean region are keeping a close eye on the latest disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean that left the coast of Africa.
This morning (Aug. 31), the National Hurricane Center said that a tropical wave located about midway between the coast of Africa and the Cabo Verde Islands continues to produce a large area of showers and few thunderstorms.
According to the NHC, environmental conditions are conducive for development of the system, and a tropical depression could form next week while the system moves across the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean.
It is predicted that heavy rainfall is possible over portions of the southern Cabo Verde Islands during the next few days, and that interests on those islands should monitor the progress of the system.
It is also predicted that the formation chance through 48 hours is at 20 percent, while its long term view over the next five days is 60 percent.
