Ministry of National Security Official calls for new crime data management system to be installed in all police stations

By: UNDP, Press Release

UNDP and USAID to support modernization of the St. Kitts and Nevis Police Force

19 September 2019, Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis – During his first official visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis, newly appointed Resident Representative for UNDP’s Multi-Country Office for Barbados and the OECS – Mr. Magdy Martinez-Soliman – expressed strong support for a new crime data management system, highlighting that the region’s development is dependent on citizen security, smart policing and the need to protect lives and properties, in light of tourism and foreign investment.

“In the Caribbean, economic and social well-being has been significantly reduced by high levels of violent crime,” Mr. Martinez-Soliman shared. Police forces must therefore keep up and take over if they are to apprehend criminals and gather the evidence that will allow a judge to incarcerate them.

Mr. Martinez-Soliman’s sentiments were in line with those of the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Country Representative, Mr. Clinton White who echoed the idea that police technology has to keep up to fight violent crime effectively. Permanent Secretary in St. Kitts and Nevis’ Ministry of National Security, Osmond Petty expressed his hope that after the pilot demonstration of the new system to gather evidence, all police stations in the country will soon be linked up.

The new crime data management system is a part of the Caribbean Citizen Security Toolkit, supported by UNDP and donor, USAID. The system – called Police Records Management Information System (PRMIS) – facilitates an evidence-based approach to crime prevention and, builds capacity within the Saint Kitts and Nevis Police Force. PRMIS will assist Saint Kitts and Nevis in transitioning from a paper-based data collection process to a digitized system.
