September 24th, 2019 -- St. Kitts International Academy (S.K.I. Academy) joined forces with people around the globe to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Also known as World Peace day, it is celebrated around the world on the 21st of September each year. The day was created in 1981 with the help of the United Nations Secretary-General to spread the message of peace throughout the world.
By teaching peace education to children (even in war-torn areas) the aim is to one day live in a world where peace reigns. Discussions about living in a world void of war and violence are held in classrooms around the world. In many instances countries, even in conflict zones, have observed ceasefire agreements and allowed aid in to areas not ordinarily granted access to relief efforts on Peace Day.
St. Kitts international Academy, in solidarity with our global community, ‘stood for peace’ on Monday, September 23rd. The entire S.K.I. family; students, parents and teachers, wore white (the international color of peace) and stood for peace on our playing field at 9am. The culminating event was the formation of a human peace sign.
To further the cause, students in Kindergarten – Grade 3 went to Windsor University to spread the message of peace with students and colleagues at the learning institution. Seeing the diverse learning communities of both St. Kitts International Academy and Windsor University, come together to spread the message of peace was a truly special occasion.
In addition, a ‘Peace Wall’ was created in the school cafeteria. The saying, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” was written in 8 different languages surrounding a world map. It will serve as a continual reminder to the school community to work toward peaceful solutions to conflict.
Next year, more schools are encouraged to spread the message of peace and join forces with people all around the world working toward a peaceful solution to world challenges.
