BASSETERRE (August 31, 2009) — More than 24 former sugar workers stand to benefit from Labour’s housing program and many others will benefit from 65 homes to be completed by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in West Basseterre, Minister of Housing, Hon. Cedric Liburd said.

Speaking to hundreds of West Basseterre constituents and party supporters on August 30, Liburd said that his government has proven itself as the government with the track record in providing homes for families.

In 14 years the Labour government built 2500 houses while the People’s Action Movement (PAM) built 250 houses in 15 years.

“We recognize that you should benefit from our housing program and we are going to continue that,” Liburd told the crowd.

Liburd said that five of the houses for the sugar workers had already been built and that the others will be built shortly. He also said that of the 65 NHC homes, 18 of them had already started to be built in the Buckley’s Housing Development area.

While PAM looked after themselves, the Labour government is looking after the people so that they can make a meaningful contribution to their country, Liburd said.
