Rain forces abandonment of LICA 50 Over opening day

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - DESPITE some level of play on the opening day of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association 50 Over Competition, rain had the final say in the first round of action in Antigua and Barbuda.

Playing at All Saints, teams St. Kitts and Montserrat could have only mustered 46 overs in their encounter before persistent rain brought an end to the encounter.

Montserrat won the toss, elected to bat first and were reduced to 170 for 9 in 46 overs.

Joshua Grant top scored with a patient 58 from 103 balls, striking  seven fours and one six in the process. He was supported by J Peters (23) and S Tuitt (19).

T Warde was the pick of the bowlers for St. Kitts, bagging 2 for 24 from 10 overs, while Sheno Berridge took 2 wickets in 8 overs as well as D. Jacobs and J Taylor taking two each.

The action continues today (Oct.19) with St. Kitts taking on St. Maarten, while Nevis will battle against host Antigua and Barbuda at Pigotts, and Montserrat will square off with Anguilla at All Saints.

Meanwhile, Head Coach of Team St. Kitts Shane Jeffers has expressed confidence  that his side could retain the title they had won for the last three years.

While speaking on local radio, Coach Jeffers described the team’s preparations as going well, as they had three practice matches before departing to Antigua on Thursday (Oct.17).

He explained that before the practice matches, the team was in training a month earlier to get in the much needed fitness regime ahead of the tournament.

Despite the just concluded Caribbean Premier League season, the Head Coach confirmed that it had no bearing on his side as only one player competed in that tournament.
