Roadtown, Tortola - The Ministry of Health and Social Development achieved another milestone that would help Government respond to challenges related to the significant burden of chronic non-communicable diseases in the Territory.

As a result of the ministry’s request, the Territory gained membership in the Collaborative Action for Risk Prevention and Effective Management of Non-communicable Diseases (CARMEN) Network. Confirmation of this came via a letter of acceptance from Director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Dr. Mirta Roses-Periago to the Deputy Premier and subject minister Honourable Dancia Penn OBE, QC.

The PAHO official applauded the ministry for its commitment and significant efforts to address issues related to chronic non-communicable diseases in the Virgin Islands.

Honourable Penn first mentioned the ministry’s efforts to gain membership in the CARMEN Network during the launching of a local Task Force for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases in June this year. “We are expecting to receive technical guidance and support in developing a comprehensive and integrated strategy and policy on chronic diseases. CARMEN should also provide us with opportunities for training for health professionals and for benefits in the regional efforts,” Honourable Penn said at that time.

With confirmation of the BVI’s membership, Acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry Mrs. Petrona N. Davies said she is looking forward to the benefits that would come from the Territory’s admission to the CARMEN Network.

“Our participation in CARMEN will not only enhance the Government’s efforts in responding effectively to rising incidents of chronic illnesses in our Territory, but would also contribute to the overall strengthening of that regional network,” she noted.

The CARMEN Network aims to promote and establish chronic disease policies and programmes at the national and sub-regional levels in the Americas, in support of the achievement of the Regional Strategy on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control.

The Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation serves as the Secretariat for the CARMEN Network. A small management committee composed of representatives of the CARMEN Network, oversees and directs the CARMEN activities.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development aspires to provide leadership that promotes health, social wellbeing, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development of the Virgin Islands.
