BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Embassy of the Republic of China on Taiwan has joined the Federation’s advancement of Information Communications Technology (ICT) in the education system by donating two computers to each of the islands’ secondary schools.
On Monday (Aug. 31) at the opening ceremony of the summer workshop for educators, Resident Ambassador His Excellency Rong-Chuan Wu handed over the first two computer sets to the Minister of Education Hon. Sam Condor. The new equipment was in turn handed over to a representative of the Washington Archibald High, the first school to benefit from the donations.
HE Wu told SKNVibes that the Embassy has a mandate to promote ICT, especially in the primary and secondary schools to ensure that every student has access to a computer.
He added that while the contributions may be on a small-scale this year, the Embassy is considering gradually expanding the donations because the use of ICT in education is “highly important”.
“We would like the schools to be better equipped with ICT in order for them to benefit and take advantage of the technology. And so, by giving these computers, we are promoting more computer education in schools,” Wu noted.
The ambassador said that the use of ICT makes the learning process “most efficient”, adding that once appropriately applied it would facilitate the personal development of students in a way that leads to “great development for the entire nation”.
The remainder of the secondary schools are expected to receive their computer sets in the first school term.
Education officials, including Minister Condor and Chief Education Officer Patrick Welcome, worded the Ministry’s gratitude for the partnership with the Taiwanese Embassy, and stated that it looks forward to continued collaborations in the future.
