BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, December 5, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- St. Kitts and Nevis continues to register an increased number of visitor arrivals, and Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr the Hon Timothy Harris at his monthly press conference on Wednesday December 4 applauded Tourism Island Constables for enhancing tourist safety.
According to Prime Minister Harris, St. Kitts and Nevis had in the period January to November 2019 welcomed 914,959 cruise passengers and 139,550 air passenger arrivals.
Projections are that the upward trend will continue into 2020 as in November, American and Delta Air Lines announced that they will be extending their existing non-stop Saturday flights to St. Kitts from JFK to include the month of May 2020. This will now provide continuous service from peak season all through to summer.
“Very welcome news indeed,” said the Honourable Prime Minister at the press conference that was held in the Parliamentary Lounge at Government Headquarters on Church Street in Basseterre. “More tourists to our country mean more jobs and more opportunities for all of us, but in particular for our young people.”
Dr Harris observed that a safer St. Kitts and Nevis is a prosperous St. Kitts & Nevis, and the country looks forward to welcoming more and more cruise ships and visitors to its shores.
“To enhance tourist safety, we introduced what has been described as Tourism Island Constables,” he said. “We trained them, and we strategically placed them at most tourist attractions - Port Zante, St. George’s Anglican Church, and at the Independence Square.”
The Prime Minister added: “The report so far is that they have been doing quite a good job and I hope that continues to be so.”
Twenty four Tourism Island Constables were commissioned at Government House on Monday February 18 this year, where Governor General His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton administered the oath of office.
After they took the oath of office and received instruments of appointment, Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr the Hon Timothy Harris noted that they would add to the calm, safety and peace of the country and that he was counting on them to deliver.
Dr Harris told the new Tourism Island Constables that many of the persons they would interact with in the course of their duties would be tourists, and he advised them to be helpful and to offer pleasant service.
Present at the press conference were Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Mrs Carlene Henry-Morton, and the Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Ms Racquel Brown.
Supporting Prime Minister Harris at the press conference were Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Shawn Richards, Minister of Public Infrastructure the Hon Ian Patches Liburd, Attorney General the Hon Vincent Byron, and Minister of State for Health the Hon Wendy Phipps.
