Simmonds to launch “Making of a National Hero” this week

By: VhCommunications, Press Release

Monday, 16th December, 2019 -- Two special ceremonies will be held in St. Kitts & Nevis this week to celebrate the official launch of the autobiography of the country’s founding Prime Minister, Dr. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds.

The book, which was completed in early November this year, is titled, “The Making of a National Hero”.

The ceremonies have been scheduled for the Methodist Church Hall, (Old Boys School), located on Victoria Road, on Thursday, 19thDecember, at 7:00pm, and the following day in Nevis, at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, in Charlestown, starting at 6:00pm.

The book, according to Sir Kennedy, traces his life as boy growing up in Basseterre, through his years in primary and secondary school, before heading to university to qualify as a medical doctor in the early 1960s.

The autobiography also prominently features many signal and life changing events in the life of Doctor Simmonds, including his tenure as the country’s last premier and first prime minister.

It also adequately captures the journey to political independence, the struggles of the Nevisian and Anguillan people and the two commissions of enquiry that were launched by the incoming Labour Administration after the 1995 General Elections.

The pages of the book are also filled with rich information providing Kittitians and Nevisians with details about the formation of the People’s Action Movement, (PAM), the sinking of the MV Christena and the formation of the 1980 coalition government between PAM and the Nevis Reformation Party, (NRP).

The book is already available online via Amazon and can be purchased in the United States and other countries where there is a Barnes & Noble Book Store. A Kindle version is equally available to those preferring to ready a soft copy.

In St. Kitts & Nevis, books will be sold at all major bookstores, including Harpers, Laws Book Store and the St. Christopher Heritage Trust, while in Charlestown, copies will be on sale at Triple M One Stop Book Store.

A wide cross section of the public is expected to be present at both launch events in St. Kitts on Thursday and Friday in Nevis. These will include the Governor General, Prime Minister, Deputy Governor General and Premier of Nevis, Parliamentarians, Diplomats and other distinguished members of the national community.

However, Simmonds said that it is very important for the public to note that attendance is open to everyone and no special invitation is required.

Sir Kennedy Simmonds served as leader of St. Kitts and Nevis from 1980-1995 and was named the fifth National Hero in 2015.
