JW.ORG: The website with 1000 languages and counting

St. Kitts and Nevis, 13th January 2020 -- From the busy streets of Basseterre to the serene villages of Nevis, Jehovah’s Witnesses can be seen spreading the word of God. While many persons are familiar with popular websites like Facebook and Google, to socialize and research information. The official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses, www.jw.org, has been providing informative educational content, based on the Bible, to millions around the world, including St. Kitts and Nevis.

On November 4th, 2019, the website, www.jw.org, had its Bible-based content translated in an astonishing 1000 languages. The information found on the website consists of videos, articles and music catering to different demographics and cultures.

Just to give some perspective as to how unprecedented this feat is, Google can be searched in over 148 languages and Wikipedia has over 300 language editions. “On a large level, jw.org is ahead of the curve,” states John Yunker, author of The Web Globalization Report Card. “Even Facebook, with support for more than 100 languages, has a long way to go.”

“Translating into and publishing in so many languages can pose special challenges,” explains Izak Marais, who directs the Translation Services group at the world headquarters in Warwick, New York, U.S.A. “At times we wanted to publish in a less common language, but not all the characters were available for that language. So, over the years, we have provided artwork for countless characters and font sets, allowing us to produce printed publications in hundreds of languages. Similarly, we have overcome many challenges to make our publications available in the many languages on jw.org. In fact, many of those 1,000 languages have no other publications available on the web.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses take the words of Jesus Christ very seriously when he said ‘this good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations,’.

“It took us a little over a hundred years to reach 508 languages in January 2013,” says Geoffrey Jackson, a Governing Body member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. “But it is remarkable that in just under seven years we have nearly doubled our translation production – from 508 to 1,000.”

Volunteers, motivated by love of God and people, work in some 350 remote translation offices (RTOs) around the world. RTOs are located in areas with a high concentration of native speakers to allow translators full immersion in the language.

Clive Martin, who directs the MEPS Programming division responsible for publishing content on jw.org, added: “One challenge we have faced is how to represent an article in hundreds of languages, with different scripts and layouts, on a single website. For example, 21 of the languages we support are written from right to left. For the 100 sign languages we support, we had to create a unique design that is easy for deaf users to navigate.”

Numerous nationalities and language groups have settled in and called the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, home. Yet, even though Jehovah’s Witnesses make up less than 2% of the religious landscape, they are determined to keep translating Bible-based content, so that all have the opportunity to get to know God and his purposes.
