CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – NINE days after the New Year’s Day traffic accident in Nevis, Melisa Lawrence of New Castle had succumbed to her injuries at the Alexandra Hospital and the driver of the vehicle has since been charged for causing her death.

According to a police communiqué, 21-year-old Rennell Daniel of Westbury was charged yesterday (Jan. 15) with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, Driving Without a Valid Driver’s License and Driving Without Insurance.

The communiqué stated that on Tuesday (Jan. 14), an autopsy performed on the body of 42-year-old Melisa Lawrence concluded that her death was due to a Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot in the lungs) due to a fractured leg as a result of a traffic accident.

Lawrence was one of four occupants of the vehicle (motor jeep P6654) that was involved in the traffic accident.

The vehicle is owned by Terrance Wyatt of New Castle, but was being driven by Daniel.

The accident had occurred along the Island Main Road in Cotton Ground at about 4:20 a.m. on the day in question.

Police reported that while the vehicle was traveling in the direction of New Castle, it had collided with a wall when it had gotten in the vicinity of Nelson’s Spring.

Daniel and the three passengers were taken to the Alexandra Hospital for medical attention, but Lawrence had remained there and succumbed to her injuries on Friday afternoon (Jan. 10).
