Old Road, St. Pauls, Village and Conaree Register Wins

Action on Saturday night between Trafalgar Southstars and KFC United Old Road Jets
By: Andre Huie, Press Release

January 29th, 2020 -- KFC United Old Road Jets edged newly promoted Trafalgar Southstars 2-1 on Saturday night at the Warner Park, in a match that could have gone either way. Kaylon Liburd got things rolling for Old Road with a goal in the 26th minute, but Sean Percival of Trafalgar Southstars equalize for the Premier League newbies in the 60th minute, with a towering header inside the danger zone. But not before long, Old Road regained the lead from the penalty spot after a defender handled the ball inside the box, which was easily slotted home by Lance Lewis in the 80th minute. Old Road had a chance to extend the lead again from the penalty spot, but Southstars goalkeeper Zaquelle Browne this time guessed correctly to stop the shot and keep the score 2-1 in literally the last play of the match.

Coach Alexis Morris of Old Road said even though his team won, they made the match harder than it had to be. “I want to say to my team congratulations on the three points. I think we made the game more difficult than it should have been for us. Some of the key points we place on them they basically went away from it,” Coach Morris said.

“Guys on the pitch just have to be disciplined and carry out instructions and we will be ok.” He said once the players on his team who are out on suspension return, Old Road should do better, especially in the attacking area.

Coach Morris took over coaching Old Road this season after spending several years coaching Conaree F.C., even leading them to a title in 2013. Coaching Old Road is a different experience all together, but one he relishes. “I really wanted a break from the game but I was approached by a number of players who I had coached from the Verchilds High School and they asked me to come and lend them a helping hand. And since I live in the area, it was a welcome thing….I must say that they welcome me with open arms,” Coach Morris said. He added that the players are eager to learn and perform. He believes that in the future, the Old Road Jets will be a team to reckon with.

Meanwhile Zaquelle Browne, the Trafalgar Southstars goalkeeper was thrilled to have saved his team from conceding another goal in literally the last kick of the match from the penalty spot. “It was a good penalty. The first penalty he went to his right, so I guess he would switch to the left and I just did that and the choice was right,” Zaquelle said. He said it was unfortunate that they lost the match considering they played well in the first half.

He believes the team can pick themselves up from this defeat and move on to do great things in the Premier League. “We have been training extra hard...we have the energy to show that we are willing to win a game,” he added.
