BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 12, 2020 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris says his Team Unity Government is using the observation of its fifth year anniversary to reaffirm its commitment to continuing its exceptional work that will redound to the benefit of the people of the twin island Federation.

Speaking in the Wednesday, February 12 sitting of the National Assembly, the honourable prime minister said his administration will use the time available to them, as set out in section 47 (2) of the Constitution of Saint Christopher and Nevis, to continue its policies, programmes and projects.

The Constitution further provides for an administration’s term to continue 90 days after the fifth anniversary of the Parliament.

“Our first sitting of Parliament was on May 14th, 2015. The five year anniversary is therefore the 14th day of May, 2020 and 90 days thereafter take us up to the 12th of August, 2020,” Prime Minister Harris said, while noting that “there is no need for any anxiety in the community about when is the election.”

Prime Minister Harris reaffirmed that the Team Unity administration will comply with the Constitution. However, in the meantime, it will continue to do excellent work on behalf of the people.

“I am thinking about serving the people; I’m thinking about doing more for the poor and elderly; I am thinking about upgrading the services of our hospitals; I am thinking about more scholarships for our young people to go abroad and study; I am thinking about delivering a music studio and cultural developments for our young people, and I am thinking about ensuring that we establish a framework in which the cannabis industry can be developed in St. Kitts and Nevis,” the prime minister emphasized.

Over the five years, the Team Unity administration has been successful in advancing the lives and livelihoods of the people of the country and has made St. Kitts and Nevis the quintessential model of a well-managed small island state.

“Today we stand with the highest per capita income of all the member states within the ECCU. Today we stand as a country with one of the largest reserves in history; today we stand among our peers with the lowest debt to GDP ratio of all independent states within the currency union—a stark contrast to what was before Team Unity,” said Prime Minister Harris.
